Amazon.com Product Description

Zenith's L20V36 20-inch LCD television features high-tech image enhancements like Super IPS technology, Faroudja DCDI De-Interlacer processing, and a 3-line digital comb filter. This is an EDTV display, which means it's a step closer to high-definition or HDTV than standard TVs. When used with a progressive-scan DVD player (or 480p-output DTV set-top box) you'll get seamless, razor-sharp images from your favorite movies and concert videos. The set receives NTSC broadcast signals for off-air viewing, while its inputs accept feeds from cable/antenna, HDTV set-top boxes (480i/480p) and satellite dishes.

Pictures render in extremely detailed, 4:3 aspect-ratio 640 x 480 resolution, which is perfect for progressive-scan DVD outputs and video games. You also get high brightness (450 cd/m2) for a bright picture even in light-drenched environments. Inputs include high-resolution component-video, S-video, computer RGB, RF, and composite-video/analog stereo audio.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be cheaper and, to some eyes, slightly more natural looking than their plasma flat-panel counterparts, which usually "spec" higher (higher brightness, higher contrast ratio).

Super In Plane Switching (Super IPS) technology (made by Zenith's parent company, LG Electronics), which delivers unprecedented horizontal and vertical viewing angles of 176 degrees--virtually equaling those of CRTs, all the while ensuring better, clearer pictures from off-center seating positions than previously possible with an LCD. Super IPS uses a switching mode that treats light passing through the display at an angle virtually the same as light passing straight through the display. As a result, the set renders brightness, contrast, and color much more evenly, regardless of where you sit.

A 3-line digital comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

The set also uses Faroudja's DCDi Processor, which upconverts standard video signals (480i) to progressive-scan 480p signals, eliminating the jagged edges along diagonal lines. Progressive-scan signals create a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional pictures, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Parental control with V-Chip (a programmable feature that uses the US standard content-advisory system to exclude viewing of specific programs or program types) helps you keep young eyes off mature content. Other features include Dolby Virtual Surround processing for simulating surround sound from the set's two 5-watt speakers, and an onscreen graphic equalizer for tailoring the sound to your preference.

For connections, the set offers 1 each component- and S-video inputs, 2 composite-video inputs, and 1 coaxial RF input for use with an antenna or a VCR or cable box. A headphone output affords private listening.

What's in the Box
TV, swivel stand with tilt, and a user's manual.

Summary: Clear & Sharp Picture 2005-02-13
Comment: I purchased this TV in spring of 2004 for $999, so the latest price is a bargain in comparison. I'm not a "techie', but the picture is clear and sharp, especially compared to the other models in the store (Circuit City). Easy to set up with my cable, Direct TV, VCR and TIVO. I also liked the clean and simple look of the TV. It is very light and that was also an important point for me. It can go on any table top, TV stand or on the wall. I am certainly enjoying this TV every day and have no regrets with the purchase.

Summary: Review of my L20V36 2004-08-23
Comment: In short, I like the tv. All of the positives mentioned in the other reviews are items I'd agree with. It seems like the picture is clearer when I go directly into the tv via the cable instead of through my digital cable box and then thru my Replay TV (via SVideo). I realize that going through 2 additional boxes may not be optimal, but I'd imagine many people have a similar configuration. Where I'm most disappointed is when I bring up my ReplayTV channel guide. The listings are sort of blury - kinda like an eye test where you say "worse" rather then "better" while the doctor is dialing in your script. Its readable, but not as good as my old crt with the same configuration. DVDs via the component video do look nice.

Summary: A Good Value 2004-08-10
Comment: I bought this TV for $900 pre-tax in May and have been rather satisfied. It looks great, functions well, and has an excellent picture. Like all LCD TVs, fast-moving images look bad, but the clarity of most pictures is worth it. That said, this TV is definitely not for gaming.

The weight is its best feature. This TV can stand on any table. It is easy to move. Even my 100-lb. wife could carry it home. I will surely replace my 155 lb. behmouth with an LCD TV as soon as income permits. I think about it every time I move. This would be the ultimate college TV. It is worth the extra expense to save your back when moving.

Summary: compare apples to apples 2004-05-29
Comment: I recently purchased this TV after comparing pictures to 3 other brands at the store (Circuit City). I was ready to buy a more expansive TV on name only but could not help but notice what a much better picture this TV had, even as the store clerk told me that the signal is not very consistent in the store. I just read the other 3 reviews and I am surprised someone thought this should compete with an HDTV when it is not. (I have one on my big screen downstairs). The EDTV is sufficient for the bedroom especially with a digital cable signal and the prgressive scan that the EDTV uses.I have not noticed any lower screen lighting problem nor any sound problems. In fact, the TV gives about 5 different settings that you set for different sound depending on whether its a movie, sports, etc. It sounds like the poor reviews are coming from people who have not read the info with the TV and experimented with setting contrast, color, etc as there are various settings available also. I agree that you should see it with your own eyes. I cannot speak for their service reps as I have not needed them certainly can say I am happy with my set!

Summary: Bad, Bad and Worse 2004-01-31
Comment: I was looking for the most inexpensive 20" LCD TV I could find for my bedroom. What I found is not my father's Zenith. It's flimsy junk. I wish I had seen the remote control before I purchased it, it looks like something that would come with a $19.95 boombox (the label with the numbers and functions was all wrinkled up to boot). What a mistake. I'm sorry I didn't see the first review on Amazon prior to purchasing it. The image contrast is terrible (it seemed ok when I looked at one in the store). Bright areas cause image distortion and then there's distortion for no reason at all. Most things look like a bootleg VHS tape. The Zenith website support is horrendous! Their forms don't work. Their bulletin board is useless and comes up with "file not found" errors. It's impossible to submit a support form without a logon error. So, I called their 24/7 support. The person who answered the phone couldn't be more disinterested, unpleasant and less helpful. I wish I had a recording. They had no clue or suggestions as to what could be wrong. Im assuming they've heard this before, because they were quick to tell me it needs repair. They tell me that there aren't any people who can come to the home to fix the set "there's no one out there who knows how to fix these things". They want me to unmount it (It took me 3 weeks to find someone to pay to mount it on the wall) and send it back to them. This is $1000 item, not an electric toothbrush, I would expect a little more from them. However, I guess we all have to get used to the new millenium version of customer service. Maybe I wouldn't have been so angry, but the attitude of the "customer support respresentative" was just over the top. I will NEVER buy a ZENITH or LG product again. I was penny wise and pound foolish. I'd rather have lived with my old TV until I could've puchased a Sony or Sharp for a few hundred dollars more. THINK TEN TIMES before you buy Zenith or any other items which appear to be a bargain. Do your homework. The above review is my oppinion based on my experience.
