Summary: Samsung LNT 4642H LCD 2008-05-03
Comment: ___PART 1___
Hi, my name's AcidSnow, enjoy my review! And don't forget to look at the END of this review if you want to use my TV's HDMI-input settings for the BEST possible picture on your TV :D
I researched HDTV's (via cnet.com) for 2 months and finally decided on the Samsung LNT 4642H HDTV, in October 2007. This is a 46-inch LCD flatscreen, running at a resolution of 720p (1360*768).
It was difficult for me to decide if I wanted a 1080p or 720p screen... In the end, I decided that it was smarter for me to get a 720p HDTV because I wanted it for my PC and Xbox 360. The first reason it was smarter for me to get a 720p screen was because most Xbox 360 games do not support [true] 1080p (except for Xbox Live Arcade games). Secondly, my PC runs on hamster power, thus I would be wasting cash on a 1080p screen that wouldn't be fully supported by my PC or Xbox. Another deciding factor is that this TV has HDMI inputs!
THE REVIEW:
First off I need to say that I'm a total videophile! I'm the guy that will come to your party sit down and tell you "Your TV's color is too high, you're losing picture quality." ...With that said I've owned my Samsung LNT 4642H for 8 months. And in that time I've learned alot about this TV.
I've been to Fry's and compared this LCD TV side-by-side to other LCD/Plasma TV's of similar abilities, and I want you to know that Samsung is THE TOP CONTENDER for producing the best HDTV possible. This TV has really nice blacks, but you will NOT see it right out of the box with the manufacturer's settings (more on this later). You'll have to fiddle around with the settings to make the TV achieve the best blacks as possible, and I'll tell you how to do this at the end of my review.
Xbox 360 looks AWESOME through the HDMI cables, I'm very-very happy with how sweet Call of Duty 4 looks, and Halo 3! PC looks good to, but not as nice as the Xbox, because I'm using AVG cables for my hamster-PC. ...Time to feed him again :\
I use my TV for an average of 10hrs a day, on Xbox 360 and my PC.
The TV's viewing angles are acceptable. If you sit 5ft infront of it and 1 ft to the right/left of the edge of the TV you will notice the opposite side of the screen becomes slightly washed out: the color become a bit whiter, and the blacks become slightly grey. This isn't a problem if you make sure to have people sit in the right places (duh).
For rooms bigger than 12ft by 12ft I'd suggest getting a 56" TV or bigger, because 46" IS a bit small for my room :( 46" is big but it's not perfect, BIGGER IS BETTER!
FYI, for a 46" 720p screen I recomend you sit anywhere from 4 to 7 feet away from the TV. Any closer than 3 feet and you start to see the pixles (NOT a big deal, they look great). And since the TV is only 46", any futher than 7 and you're getting too far away (for no good reason) and are missing out on the quality of the TV (unless your eye sight is great and can see fine from far away - mine is above average).
The color is very-very nice as well - though not perfect... If the TV's "Backlight" level is low (the power going though your TV to make it brighter) then the TV's white-color has a SLIGHT hint of red. It's almost not noticable. After hours of changing settings I've concluded that white on this TV is actually pretty darn close to white, within 90%. ...All that needs to be done to keep the TV's white - white, is to keep the Backlight level at 5 or higher [scale goes from 0 to 10]. ...Like I said it took me 6 months to see this slight hint of red, so chances are you'll NEVER notice it. And honestly it does NOT affect the TV's quality whatsoever.
The TV comes with a great array of video options for your tweeking pleasures. It's almost too much for me to go into... But I will say that there are some limitations depending on the connection you use. If you use the HDMI settings you'll have ALL the options of the TV open to you (such as changing the TV's individual color aspects). If you hook up your PC into the TV via a VGA cable, some options will be lacking; for reasons I don't understand. These "lacking" options should NOT change your mind about this product, because you can actually CHEAT and gain access to *some of the TV's options for other areas of the TV. ...Remember how I said the PC's VGA cable doesnt let you change some options? Well you can hook in a HDMI cable and adjust some settings from there to affect your VGA's input. It's odd, but it works.
The only problem with this TV is the built in speakers! Read this ENTIRE paragraph -> When I got the TV I was using a 5.1 surround sound system, but about 1 month ago I started using the TV's built-in speakers. And I've noticed that the speakers will die on me; there's a milla-second when the TV's screen flashes, then the speakers go quiet. The TV's speakers won't work until I turn the TV off, and then on again. I haven't looked into the problem with Samsung yet, because my 5.1 speakers are all I need, plus the problem can be fixed by turning the TV off, then on again. There doesn't seen to be a reason for the TV's sound to cut off, I've done all sorts of tests with the sound to see what the problem might be - no solution. But the problem is not dire to the TV, since it's only happened about 10 times in the past 1 month. The sound quality on the TV is... Well it's what you'd expect from two 10watt speakers. They work fine, but if you have real speakers you'll want to use them because the TV has pretty poor bass levels. You can adjust the different frequencies though the TV's audio menu but it didnt seem to help the overall sound quality. ...But who the hell buys an awesome HDTV and doesn't have an awesome 5.1 surround sound system to go with it?
Overall
I give Samsung's LNT 4642H, 5/5 stars! ...Despite the sound cutting out the TV is still great, and that's all I wanted - awesome picture on a huge TV for a great price (from Amazon)!
PROS:
+ Great Black Level can be obtained with some adjustments in the TV's menu.
+ Picture quality is very sharp and crisp.
+ White level is very accurate.
+ Backlight options make for a very bright show!
+ Options within the TV's menu are ample.
+ 720p (1360*768) quality is flawless, every horizontal and vertical line can be counted, and I have NOT gotten a "dead pixle" yet (in 8 months of use).
+ 3 HDMI inputs, VGA input (for PC), lots of HD-component inputs, and an array of other inputs I don't use...
+ I got a 5 year warranty :)
+ Any videophile will love this TV, I garantee it!
CONS:
- The out of the box "Black Level" is set to "Normal," which is way too bright. You MUST adjust some settings in the TV's menu to make the TV's dark's more realistic (easy to do).
- I use my TV for Xbox 360 gaming, and PC usage; thus I'm on my TV about 10hrs a day... With that said: the sound on my TV's two 10watt speakers has cut off randomly ten times in one month, but is easily fixable by turing the TV off, and then on again. ...You should have 5.1 surround anyway, so who cares about the TV's speakers?
- The TV's so large that moving the mouse pointer on the screen attracts the attention of my cat... And he likes to swat at my expensive screen :P
___PART 2___
OPTIMIZING YOUR TV's HDMI PICTURE:
NOTE 1: Press the "Menu" button on the TV's Remote Control (the menu button is located under the -volume button). Once you've opened the menu, navagate it and change EVERYTHING to the values that I have written below:
NOTE 2: The MOST important change you MUST make to the TV is at the END of this post! SO READ EVERYTHING!
A) PICTURE
- Mode: "Movie"
You always want to use Movie mode because it gives you the most options to fiddle with in other menus'.
- Contrast: "100"
I use 100, but sometimes the definition of color clarity is too great, and the whites start to strain my eyes at night. 95 is acceptable, but the lower you set it the darker the TV gets; you dont want this kind of darkness so keep it between 95 and 100. The higher the TV's contrast the better!
- Brightness: "46 to 52"
I use 48. Technically speaking this TV can be set to a Brightness of 46 for the darkest [Brightness] setting within reason. It is important not to set the TV's brigtess below 46; because going below 46 causes a loss of color definition because the screen gets too dark. For optimal blacks, but visible darks you may want to set it to 48! 52 is the highest the TV should go, because above 52 it starts to whiten the blacks, and in a perfect world you don't want that.
- Sharpness: "0"
This is an HDTV, you do NOT want to increase sharpness, it only adds artifacts and degrades picture quality (when using high definition sources: Blue Ray or Xbox 360, etc...
- Color: "45 to 52"
I use 52. 45 is as low as the TV should be set; anything lower and you're just gunna lose your beautiful colors. 52 is optimal, but you can go up to 55 if you see fit (anything higher starts to look too colorful).
- Tint: "50"
Adjusting Tint on a TV is probably one of the most difficult settings to optimize. ...Thus, I have kept it at 50.
- Backlight: "5 to 10"
I use 10 for my Xbox 360, and 5 for my PC. The higher the backlight, the more power you put into your TV, the lower the backlight the less power you use. Higher backlight levels may lead to a shorter lifespan of your TV's ability to remain bright many years from now. This setting is where the TV can become TOO bright at night. So if you're in a dark room and your eyes are 'squinting' then lower this value.
- Color Tone: "Normal"
The color of the TV out of the box is fine. Cool1/2 makes the screen more blue. Warm1/2 makes the screen more red.
- Detailed Settings:
[1] Black Adjust: "Off"
If you enale Black Adjust you start to darken the screen in unessesary places. The actual "Black" of your screen should be perfect w/out the help of this option, so keep it off.
[2] Dynamic Contrast: "Off"
I keep it off. ...Because if set to anything else, the darks get dark, and the whites get too white, and your colors become over-saturated (all bad).
[3] Gamma: "0"
I use 0. Gamma is important to your TV, but you don't need to adjust it, because 0 is perfect.
[4] Color Space: "Auto"
I use Auto. Keeping Color Space ay Auto is the way to go. Because if you change it to Wide, I've noticed the overall color shifts more towards green, and it does not look right.
[5] White Balance: "I haven't messed with this."
Leave White Balance at default, unless you're a pro.
[6] My Color Control: "I haven't mess with this."
Leave My Color Control at default, unless you're a pro.
[7] Edge Enhancement: "On"
Edge Enhancement should be On. ...This feature does a great job at enhancing the picture, and making everything more focused, and less fuzzy. It's a great feature on the TV.
- Digital NR: "Off"
Noise Reduction should be off. It's not needed.
- Active Color: "Off"
You cant use this when in "Movie mode."
- DNIe: "Off"
You cant use this when in "Movie mode."
B) SETUP
- Game Mode: "Off"
Game Mode makes stuff bright, jaggy and ugly looking, keep it OFF!
- Energy Saving: "Off"
You don't want to limit your TV's ability to produce a bright picture, so keep this option OFF!
- HDMI Black Level: "Low"
This is VERY important! You MUST change this setting to Low! This is the most IMPORTANT change you need to make to your TV's settings! It will make your blacks more BLACK!!!

Summary: Fantastic picture 2007-11-28
Comment: Excellent picture, excellent colors. There's just nothing bad to say about this TV. I wish that the rear inputs were a bit better positioned, but that's just a nitpick as they're easily accessible. The standup mount that it comes with is easily removed if you want to wall mount it, and it's quite sturdy.
This TV is also compatible with Samsung's $600 powered wall mount, which is frankly incredible and well worth it. Normally a powered wall mount runs around $1500 or more and requires a separate remote. Samsung's powered wall mount costs less than half that, works with the TV remote, and has 3 preset positions to move the TV into. It will even go back to flush with the wall when you turn the set off and return to the same position it was in when you turn it back on.

Summary: Outstanding TV- Great Deal 2007-10-12
Comment: Samsung is top of the line. Fantastic HD picture. This is repetitive, but broadcast tv (cable/sattelite) only transmits HD in 720p & 1080i. Unless you are a gamer or have to have a blueray/hd-dvd, purchasing a 1080p is useless. I fretted about purchasing a 720P, but the money saved ($500) was used to purchase surround sound speaker and receivers.
You will have no regrets purchasing this.

Summary: Tearing Problem 2007-10-02
Comment: TV had a line across the bottom during playback of certain DVD's. From AVS forum research, others experienced this same "tearing" problem. Samsung offered to send a Firmware fix on a usb thumb drive for the tearing. There were also contrast issues related to latency or "gray scale persistence" when an bright image moved on a dark screen....so I decided to return the unit. I purchased directly from Amazon. Amazon was great in offering a full refund. I have other Samsung products and am generally pleased with Samsung. This product is an exception.

Summary: Awsom LCD 2007-09-04
Comment: I bought this item from Amazon. The HD TV tunner and all inputs are great. I also bought a Samsung 720P & 1080i DVD player. For this TV it is the perfect match. Both the HD TV and DVDs at 720p & 1080i look crystal clear. The packaging on the TV was also great. I had a serious problem with a 42" Toshiba that had a cracked LCD (shipping) because of bad packaging from Toshiba (it seems). I realy like the ease of use of the remote control on the Samsung 46". In the near future when the bluray war has ended I will upgrade to an 1080P TV.
