Summary: Going back to the store - 2006-09-13
Comment: I got this TV at another place. I paid just less than $600 for it. Yes, it is the exact same model number!
However, the picture is not good. It has the capability of showing the "specifications" in the menu section. It shows clearly that I have a resolution of 720 x 240 rather than the 1280 x 720 it should have. My old TV, about 8 years old, had a great picture. The same connection is on the new TV, there is no reason for the poor quality.
I could not get the PIP to work either. Additionally, I had to delete the non used channels one at a time, could not get the "scan" to work either.
I am debating a "swap" or paying more for a more known brand.

Summary: Maybe it's just bad luck but... 2006-02-09
Comment: I ordered this TV just a few days ago, took it out of the box, played with it for a few hours, and now its back in the box waiting for the UPS man to take it back to Amazon.
Problem 1: The TV has dark, splotchy areas on the right side of the screen. Not dead pixels, just smudged areas that wont go away - sort of like there was pressure on those areas for a long while.
Problem 2: When hooked to my Powerbook, I could not coerce the display into any wide screen resolutions, i.e. 1280x720, only 4:3 resolutions like 1024x768 and higher. Unacceptable.
I'm very disappointed with this TV and I can't recommend it from my experience with it.

Summary: Great flat panel TV for the price 2005-12-10
Comment: First, I'd like to address the reviewer who mentioned incompatibility with progressive scan. This is not the case, although this is what I originally thought too. The issue is, depending on which mode you have your DVD player in, there are different component hookups. This TV has 2 component hookups, one normal and one labeled "HDTV". Since progressive scan is 480p, it is technically "high definition", and therefore must be handled through the HD component hookup. This is confusing however, as this input will not accept non-HD sources, so you have to ensure your player is set to progressive, THEN switch the cables. I did this, and movies look GREAT in progressive on this TV, much fewer artifacts than 480i viewing.
Anyway, the rest. This is a solid performer. Standard TV looks good, however, as most LCD and plasma owners know, it's upsetting to admit that yes, most regular TV will look better on a $150 tube TV than on this much more expensive flat panel. This isn't where the Norcent shines though. HDTV looks out-of-this-world on it! Side by side in the stores, I noticed no picture difference between it and more expensive models, which is why I picked it up, and I've been extremely happy. There are some reviews floating around about a blue color contrast, and I may have noticed this once or twice in hundreds of hours of viewing. If it's there, it's barely distinguishable, and I've never had a guest comment on it. So don't let that scare you off.
Inputs are limiting. No DVI or HDMI, but for this price, who can agrue, especially since it technically as two components plus a VGA hookup for the computer. The speakers aren't especially amazing, but I don't use a home theater, and I've quite happy with their performance. No distorition or static whatsoever, just clean sound.
Perhaps one of the nicest features of the TV is the stand. It swivels and tilts better than ANY LCD I've ever seen. It's extremely smooth and very adjustable. This alone gives it the edge for me over other value brands.
I've owned this TV for about 6 months now, and I'm definately happy with my purchase. I paid about 100 bucks more than Amazon has it for currently, but that's to be expected with the way LCD prices have been falling as of late. I'd nab this TV again in a second for a nice bedroom TV, or for the main room in an apartment or college housing. Just make sure you fully utilize it's great HD picture capabilities and buy those widescreen movies!

Summary: OK Flat Panel, but.... 2005-09-12
Comment: This is my second flat panel TV, I also have a 17" widescreen "Pyxscape" which was also of the "low budget" variety.
By comparison, the Pyxscape is much better. Here are my gripes with the Norcent:
1) The first one I received was defective -- when I plugged it in, the power light would come on orange rather than blue, the picture would never come on and the controls were non-responsive. So far, the replacement has been OK.
2) Limited picture size options -- the Norcent only has 2 picture settings, 4:3 and 16:9. My 17" panel has about 5 settings including 16:9, 4:3, Zoom, Wide, etc. The Norcent's 2 selections are too limiting to make best use of the screen.
3) Compatibility problems with progressive scan -- My 17" flat panel is 100% compatible with Playstation 2 and DVD player progressive scan settings. The Norcent, when connected to a progressive scan source yields a distorted screen with dual images and messed up colors.
Although the price is right, I do not recommend this TV due to lack of features an incompatibility with progressive scan.

Summary: Fantastic TV Beats Many More Expensive Models! 2005-05-24
Comment: If you aresatisfied with a Tv that only offers component high def hookup options, then this TV is perfect for you. The picture is fantastic! I am able to hookup this TV as my computer monitor and then use the PIP to watch TV on one half of the TV and on the other half use the computer. I can't imagine anybody would be dissappointed with this TV.
