Amazon.com Product Description

Boasting enough high-end technologies, sleek industrial design, and crisply colorful picture, the Mitsubishi's line of high-definition LCD TVs could be considered the "Cadillacs" of HD televisions. The 32-inch LT-3280 delivers stunning image clarity based on Mitsubishi's Plush imaging technology, which converts lower quality analog and digital pictures into near-HD quality (see more about Mitsubishi's exclusive set of video-enhancing technologies below). It includes dual HD tuners and a wide variety of digital inputs (including two HDMI and a Firewire input). It's also digital cable ready with the integrated CableCARD slot and incorporates TV Guide's On Screen program guide for easy viewing of what's on today and seven days into the future.

It comes with a separate media center--featuring all AV connections--for convenient and uncluttered installation. It also includes a multi-format memory card reader, enabling you to display still photo slideshows and play digital music files (MP3 and WMA). This set can be wall-mounted with optional hardware, but it includes a matching, removable swivel stand.

The LT-3280 has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, compatibility with 480i/480p/720p/1080i video sources, 550 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) It pumps out audio via its integrated 10-watt speaker system (5 watts per two channels), which includes two 2-inch woofers and one 1-inch tweeter. It also offers Mitsubishi's Level Sound Dynamics Limiter features, which evens out the sound of programs--even during loud commercial breaks.

Other convenience features include color temperature controls, full-screen image freeze, two tuner picture-in-picture (PIP), split screen, channel preview (3 and 9 POP), and six 4:3 aspect ratio and two 16:9 aspect ratio picture formats. This set features the following video and audio connections:

  • Composite AV (RCA): 2 in
  • S-Video: 2 in
  • Component Video: 2 in
  • HDMI: 2 in, 1 out
  • Monitor: 1 out (with MonitorLink RS-232C control connection)
  • RF: 2 in
  • DVI audio: 2 in, 1 out
  • Firewire: 2

The IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire or i.Link) multimedia connection enables simple, low-cost, high-bandwidth real-time audio, video and data networking between a Mitsubishi TV and other consumer electronics products such as camcorders and DVHS VCRs. With IEEE 1394 compatible products and systems, users can record SD or HD digital video over a plug-and-play A/V network.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Digital Cable Ready
You can connect your cable television directly from the wall to this LCD TV without going through a cable box to receive all of your cable channels, including premium channels, and get an even better picture by doing so. The LT-3280 has a slot on the back for a CableCARD, a device that descrambles subscribed channels. With the CableCARD (available from your local cable TV company), the TV's internal tuner will tune directly to the subscribed cable channels, eliminating the need for a seperate cable set-top box.

When a digital cable TV channel is received via the CableCARD, it is decoded and remains a digital video signal all the way to the screen. Standard-definition digital channel signals are up-converted by the advanced processing capability in the set (see more about the Plush imaging feature below), giving it an HD-qualty picture. The resulting image has the best possible quality, with maximum bandwidth, and minimal noise and distortion.

Proprietary Mitsubishi Features
This television includes several exclusive Mitsubishi technologies that enhance its picture as well as ease of use.

  • Most important is Mitsubishi's Plush collection of imaging technologies, which upconvert lower quality images from every video source--analog and digital broadcasts, DVD players, digital cable and satellite, game consoles--to HD (720p) quality. Included in the Plush palette are Dark Detailer (which provides enhanced contrast and black levels that allows a wider palette of dark gray shades) and SharpEdge (which enhances both horizontal and vertical edges for a precise picture).
  • The SuperBright continuous backlight system features the optimum number of high-density lamps for the television's screen size, which delivers highly uniform corner-to-corner brightness that won't wash out images--even in bright daylight. It also incorporates an anti-glare screen coating.
  • For sports fans and action movie junkies, QuickMotion is an advanced high speed LCD technology that drives each pixel faster, resulting in speedier response time for crisper, less blurry images.
  • Rather than provide standard color and tint controls, Mitsubishi's PerfectColor technology enables you to adjust the screen's color palette with six independent color controls (magenta, red, yellow, green, cyan, and blue).
  • Finally, the ClearThought set of features includes all-digital audio output (which converts analog audio signals to digital audio) and the NetCommand single-remote control home theater operation system (which allows you to set up and control components using simple on-screen icons). The NetCommand remote control also include an infrared (IR) learning function, so you can program it control devices that aren't built into its memory. It also provides the TV Guide On Screen 8-day program guide system, which makes it easy to sort through all the television listings to find your favorite channels.

LCD TV, media center (for AV connections), swivel base, multibrand NetCommand remote control (with 2 AA batteries), IR emitter cable, digital coaxial audio cable, MonitorLink cable, MonitorLink/HDMI control cable, printed operating instructions

Summary: awesome image quality, but quirky 2006-07-30
Comment: For about a year I perused the HDTV section at Fry's looking at various makes and models of flat screens. By far, the best quality images came from the rather small, but insanely pricey 32" and 37" Mitsubishi LCDs. I think this item initially listed for $3k and over the last several months worked its way down. When it dipped below $1k I decided to purchase one.

An ususual thing about the LT3280 and 3780 is the included controller component. It is connected to the display by two very long cables: HDMI and RS-232. All the other peripherals (including flash memory and SD cards) connect directly to the controller. The various useful functions of the controller are tuning, signal upsampling, and a TV Guide channel index. Drawbacks of the controller are its large size - it is very deep, almost 2x as deep as a DVD player, and the constant powered on state. It gets hot and needs a small but certainly audible cooling fan to be running at all times. If you stack a component on top of the controller, make sure the cooling air flow is adequate. I found that the sound system begins to emit a high pitched whine/hum when the controller gets too hot. The size and overheating issues of the controller unit are stick out as poor design compared to the otherwise ultra-premium qualities of this product.

As for the display itself, I just can't say enough about the picture. Even though it is only 720p, it is far and away the best I've experienced. My friend has the 32" Hitachi 32HLX61 which was very highly praised in online reviews, but the LT3280 beats it out in our shared opinion. Drawbacks are very slow channel switching and turn on response. The maddeningly slow tuning will probably cure any compulsive channel surfing behavior. However, I don't watch TV all that much, and when paired with a premium DVD player this is IMO the best looking picture you can get.

Summary: the last TV you'll every want.... 2006-07-04
Comment: There isn't enough time to go over everything right about this TV. The resolution is spectacular, even from a 135 degree side view. Whne used with HD signal, you feel like you could climb into the screen. I'm going to get another for my bedroom.
